Autonomy of Art

"Once you stop the painting (song, pottery, writing, etc) and show it to somebody, it no longer belongs to you."

~ talking about the autonomy of art, this quote is from Dave Matthews from the MHD show Storytellers featuring the Dave Matthews Band.

Really think about that...interesting, huh?

There's a Nooma that speaks of this as well. [from God's perspective] I think it says something about "once you create it it's there. And it’s out of your control” [frightening enough for ya? …scares the {what-ever-word-you-prefer-to-use} out of me.] Every time I share [my darker past, a poem, how I really feel –what actually helps me feel better] I’m afraid. what will happen to me now that I’ve ‘put it out there’? –will it make my life better? –or create a new hell to live through?

Something a therapist friend of mine [one of a handful of people that know I write poetry] said is slightly helpful in this “scary business” of creating because we’re made to create. He said this to me: “you are not responsible for what others do with what you write… with what happens after you create something & share it. …you are responsible to use the gift for God’s glory. To create, …to allow your creative ability to be used by God… to restore His creation. Perhaps to awaken the need for a relationship with a creator, that is placed in everyone. To woo them back to their Maker.”
So, I guess it’s scary beautiful. That what we create could be used by God to restore the world. That we [the church] could be a shattered mirror. Alone we reflect a very small portion of His glory… but if we let Him, He can assemble us into a larger more useful mirror to reveal how wonderful He is –to reveal more of His gloriousness.
